Event Description: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) represent a diverse category of 20 tropical infections that are prevalent in economically disadvantaged communities within developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. They stem from various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and parasitic worms (helminths). These illnesses are less widespread in areas with temperate climates, largely due to the presence of a cold season that helps control the population of disease-carrying vectors. However, the advent of climate change and global warming has led to the expansion of NTDs into temperate regions. Among these NTDs, Leishmaniasis is caused by obligate intracellular protozoa from the Leishmania genus. Leishmaniasis ranks among the top 10 neglected tropical diseases worldwide, affecting over 12 million individuals. During this seminar, a group of globally recognized speakers will delve into the topics of NTD diagnostics and the development of drugs with a structure-based and AI-supported approach, with a specific focus on targeting the parasites responsible for Leishmaniasis.
